What to do in
Warnemünde & Rostock

Walking tours

Explore the quaint fishing village of Warnemünde, which, despite being Germany’s largest cruise ship terminal, has maintained much of its historic charme.

Boat tours

On „Alter Strom“, the main road along the old canal, you will find several boats leaving for 1-hour harbor cruises, or even 2 hour cruises (the longer ones incude the harbor of Rostock). Cost is between Euro 20 and 30 per person, depending on the ship and the tour you pick. Ships leave often.

Alternatively you can also do a „Heiderundfahrt“. The boats leave the Warnemünde Hafen and take you to the Rostock Harbor, as well as the nature preserve around the Rostock Heath where you can get out for a stroll, or a leisurely lunch at the historic restaurant Schnatermann. Cost is Euro 25 per person (not including lunch). Departure is at 11:30 am.

There is also a ferry that takes you to the „Hohe Düne“, which is a way to cross through the harbor without paying for a 1-hour cruise. On the other side of the Warnow you will find the luxury resort Hohe Düne (the spa is open to the public). The ferry leaves not far from the Warnemünde train station and costs only a couple of Euros.

Tours by train and tram

From the train station in Warnemünde you can take a train (‚S-Bahn‘) to Rostock. There you have access to trains to Berlin, Wismar and other towns. Travel times are roughly: Berlin 3 hours, Wismar 2 hours, Hamburg (3-4 hours), Stralsund (1 hour 40 minutes), Bad Doberan (1 hour).

If you don’t want to go that far, you can take the S-Bahn into Rostock, and take a tram from the train station to the center of town (Neuer Markt). Rostock is a lovely, historic town. Don’t forget to visit the ‚Marienkirche ‚St. Mary’s Church‘ from the 13th century. Alternatively, you can take the tram from Rostock main station to the best zoo in Europe (https://www.zoo-rostock.de/en/index.html), which is also a highlight.
